Add the procedures your vet has mentioned — exam, X-ray, bloodwork, dental, surgery — and we'll show you a low / typical / high estimate adjusted for your state.
What affects the price
- Clinic type. A general practice charges materially less than a specialty hospital or ER for the same procedure.
- Geography. Vet labor in CA, NY, MA, NJ, and DC commands a premium. Rural Midwest and Deep South generally come in lower.
- Pet size. Anesthesia, surgical time, and most medications scale with weight. A giant-breed dental cleaning can cost 2–3× a toy-breed cleaning.
- Imaging vs. exam alone. X-ray and ultrasound add the most per-visit cost after surgery and hospitalization.
- Specialty referrals. Cardiology, neurology, oncology — board-certified specialists bill 2–4× general practice rates.

How to lower your bill (without skipping care)
- Ask for a written estimate before authorizing treatment.
- Ask whether bloodwork or imaging can be batched into one visit.
- Ask for the generic version of any prescribed medication.
- Ask whether the recheck can be a phone call or photo update.
- Use a vet practice's wellness plan if they offer one — and read what's included.
- For non-urgent dental, get a second opinion. Pricing varies dramatically.
FAQ
How much is a routine vet visit?
$50–$150 for the exam itself. A typical wellness visit with vaccines, fecal, and basic bloodwork runs $150–$350.
Why is my emergency bill so much higher?
Emergency clinics charge premium pricing for after-hours staffing and rapid-response capability. Use our Emergency Vet Calculator for those scenarios.
Will pet insurance cover this bill?
Most accident-and-illness policies reimburse 70–90% after a deductible — but only on covered items, with no pre-existing conditions. Wellness exams and vaccines are usually only covered with an add-on.
