Editorial standards

How we research, review, and correct pet cost content on PetPlanWise.com. Combines our editorial policy, corrections process, and medical content standards.

Editorial policy

What we publish

Calculator-first cost estimates and decision guides for U.S. dog and cat owners. Every cost page presents a low / typical / high range derived from the data sources listed on our sources page. We do not publish cost guarantees, vet-billing advice, or veterinary diagnostic recommendations.

How we research

Numbers come from a small set of authoritative sources: AVMA pet ownership demographics, ASPCA cost-of-pet-ownership estimates, BLS Veterinary Services CPI, NAPHIA pet insurance industry reports, Synchrony Lifetime of Care studies, Banfield State of Pet Health, AAHA and AVDC clinical guidelines, and OFA / Morris Animal Foundation breed risk data. We blend ranges across multiple sources rather than rely on a single figure. State multipliers approximate regional cost-of-living differences for veterinary labor and rent — they are estimates, not ZIP-code-precise prices.

How we write

Plain English over clinical jargon where possible. Source-link inline whenever a number could be checked. Show ranges, not false-precision averages. Be neutral on insurance — show the math both ways. Disclose affiliate relationships above any partner CTA, not below.

What we deliberately don't do

  • We don't publish ZIP-level pricing as if it were exact.
  • We don't give individualized veterinary or financial advice.
  • We don't accept paid placements from insurance carriers or pet retailers.
  • We don't gate calculators behind email signup.
  • We don't use popups, interstitials, or autoplay video.

Independence

PetPlanWise.com is an independent publisher. We are not owned by, funded by, or affiliated with any pet insurance carrier, veterinary chain, pet food brand, or pet retailer. When affiliate links to insurance carriers or retailers appear, they are clearly disclosed above the link itself and on our affiliate disclosure page. Affiliate partnerships do not influence our calculator math, our cost ranges, or which carriers we cover.

Corrections policy

What we correct

Factual errors, outdated cost figures, broken source links, miscalculations in calculator output, breed information errors, or anything materially misleading.

How to report a correction

Email corrections@petplanwise.com with the URL of the page, the specific claim or number you believe is incorrect, and (if available) a source supporting the correct value. We aim to respond within 5 business days.

How corrections are flagged

When a published page is corrected, we update the date stamp on that page and add a brief note describing what changed. Material corrections (a number that changes by more than a typical confidence range, or a factual error in medical or insurance content) get a visible callout near the affected section. Cosmetic typos do not get a callout.

Cost data updates vs. corrections

Cost figures are reviewed and updated quarterly as new survey or insurance data lands. A scheduled cost update is not a correction — it is normal data freshness. We log the review date on every page so readers can see when the figures were last checked.

Medical content review

What gets medical review

Cost ranges for veterinary procedures, breed-specific health risk assumptions used in our calculator, terminology for medical conditions, and any guidance about when to seek emergency care versus monitor at home.

How medical content is reviewed

All medical content is checked against published clinical guidance from the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), the American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC), the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), and breed-specific risk data from the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) and Morris Animal Foundation. We currently review medical content in-house using these sources. We are evaluating engagement of a licensed DVM as a named editorial reviewer; until that role is filled, we do not claim individual veterinarian endorsement of our content.

What our content is not

Our cost estimates and guides are educational. They are not a substitute for veterinary care, a replacement for advice from a licensed veterinarian, or a financial recommendation. If your pet is sick or injured, contact your veterinarian or an emergency veterinary clinic. If you are making a financial decision based on our calculators, verify pricing with your local veterinary clinic before committing.

Reviewer credentials and bylines

Pages currently carry a PetPlanWise Editorial byline. This refers to our internal editorial team. Once we engage a named DVM medical reviewer, their credentials and state of licensure will appear in the byline of any page they have reviewed, with a link to their reviewer profile.

Affiliate and advertising disclosures

Some pages link to insurance carriers, pet retailers, or pet financing services through affiliate programs. When a link is an affiliate link, a clear Disclosure paragraph appears immediately above it, separately from any disclosure in the page footer. We may earn a commission if you purchase through a partner link, at no extra cost to you. Affiliate revenue does not affect our cost estimates, our calculator math, or which products we cover. See our full affiliate disclosure.
