Not sure how big a buffer you'd ever need? The Pet Cost Simulator runs 10,000 lifetimes of your breed to show the full range of possible costs — including the rare catastrophe that's the whole reason insurance exists.

How to think about it

Insurance is protection against the large, unexpected bill. The math rarely favors using insurance to cover routine care.

If your pet stays healthy, you'll spend more on premiums than you'd ever recover. If your pet has one major incident — bloat, foreign object, fracture, urinary blockage — insurance usually pays for itself many times over.

A reasonable framework: "Could I write a $5,000 check tomorrow without changing my life?" If no, consider insurance, a dedicated savings account, or both.

What insurance usually doesn't cover

  • Pre-existing conditions diagnosed before policy start
  • Routine wellness (vaccines, exams, dental cleaning) — usually a paid add-on
  • Behavioral training, grooming, breeding
  • Conditions diagnosed during waiting periods (typically 14–30 days)
  • Some hereditary conditions in older pets

FAQ

Is pet insurance worth it?

It depends on your savings buffer and your pet's risk profile. The calculator above models both for you specifically.

When is the best time to enroll?

Before any health condition appears — once a condition is diagnosed it becomes pre-existing and excluded. Many owners enroll between 8 weeks and 6 months of age.

What happens to premiums as my pet ages?

Most policies raise premiums each year as your pet ages. Senior premiums can be 2–3× adult premiums on the same policy.
